When Thibault Liger-Belair broke from nine generations of négociant tradition in 2001 to farm his own vines, he inherited a family name once attached to La Tâche Grand Cru — and a deliberate mandate to let terroir speak without amplification. La Roche sits in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, where limestone and chaille (limestone-flint mix) soils over clay force Pinot Noir roots deep, producing fruit with a taut, mineral-driven character distinct from the richer clay-limestone of the valley floor. Elevation and cooler air circulation in this back-country plateau extend hang time, preserving the acidity that defines the domaine's house signature.

In the cellar, 100% Pinot Noir is hand-harvested with triple sorting — at the vine, before, and after the destemmer — then fermented with native yeasts in open-top vessels, with minimal pumpovers and pigeage in keeping with Thibault's philosophy of gentle infusion rather than extraction. Aging runs in oak barrels with village-level one-third new oak, lightly charred over five to seven minutes, with a mandatory three-year wood-drying period to soften tannin integration. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

What separates this cuvée from most Hautes-Côtes production is the full biodynamic farming regime — horse-plowed soils, sulfites sourced from a natural Polish mine — applied to an appellation where such rigour is rare. In the warm 2020 vintage, Thibault deliberately avoided over-extraction to preserve freshness and energy, yielding a wine of fine promise per Winehog.
