Fleurie "Clos Vernay"
฿฿
Clos Vernay is a single-vineyard parcel within Fleurie's most prestigious terroir, sited on the eastern slope of the appellation where decomposed granite and clay soils drain rapidly, concentrating fruit intensity across the 2–3 hectare block. Elevation ranges 220–280 metres, with northeast aspect providing moderate sun exposure and natural acidity retention typical of cooler Fleurie microclimates.
Domaine Lafarge-Vial employs whole-bunch fermentation for this expression, allowing carbonic maceration to develop the wine's signature silky mouthfeel while preserving aromatic volatility. Fermentation occurs in open wooden vats over 8–10 days, with minimal extraction; the wine is aged 6–8 months in neutral oak and concrete, avoiding new wood that would mask the site's mineral signature. Bottling occurs without fining or filtration, preserving natural tannin texture.
The transgression here is restraint: in an era of extracted, fruit-forward Beaujolais, Clos Vernay remains structurally transparent, allowing granite minerality and Gamay's red-fruit purity to dominate. This is Fleurie as terroir expression, not fruit bomb.
Drink 2024–2032 for optimal balance of primary fruit and secondary complexity.
