When Christian Moueix — steward of Château Pétrus — arrived at Napanook in 1983, he refused to irrigate, a decision that remains almost singular in Napa Valley and defines every bottle that follows. Napanook Vineyard sits on a 124-acre alluvial fan spreading from the Mayacamas foothills in Yountville AVA; the central blocks that supply this second label occupy lower alluvial gravel over clay-loam of volcanic origin, with natural drainage and afternoon cooling from San Pablo Bay breezes that slow ripening and preserve acidity. Dry-farming forces root systems deep into this volcanic substrate, producing small, phenolically dense berries that carry iron and mineral tension rather than the plush extraction typical of Napa Cabernet. Vinification proceeds lot by lot per block, with hand-sorting complemented by optical berry selection, gentle pump-overs, and a low-pressure vertical press to keep extraction delicate. The wine ages in 100% French oak barrique for approximately 15–18 months, with roughly one-third to 40% new wood depending on vintage — a restrained oak regime by Napa standards. What distinguishes Napanook within its category is its explicit role as a terroir document rather than a selection wine: all fruit is estate-grown on Napanook Vineyard, and the winemaking philosophy mirrors the Moueix château model of minimal intervention and no fining agents. The 2011 Napa vintage was cool and challenging, favouring structured, lower-alcohol wines with firm acidity and tighter tannin architecture — characteristics that align precisely with Dominus's graphite-edged house style. Drink from 2024 through the early 2030s.
