Château Siran lies at Labarde, in the southern part of the Margaux appellation, with 25 hectares of Margaux vines among 37 plots. The soil is a gravelly-sand that warms quickly, which the estate describes as an early terroir, with plots sloping towards the Gironde and facing east-west. The vineyard is unusually Merlot-led for the Médoc at roughly 46% Merlot and 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a notably high 9% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The result is a Margaux with silky texture and refined tannins, ripe fresh fruit, and earthy, tobacco-tinged nuances, with the Petit Verdot lending a spicy edge.
The two things that shape Siran's personality are its Merlot-forward blend and that fast-warming gravel-sand, which the estate likens to Pomerol's — together they give a rounder, earlier-approachable Margaux than the Cabernet-dominant norm further north in the commune. The 9% Petit Verdot is the detail to watch: it is a high proportion by Médoc standards and supplies the violet-and-spice lift. Average vine age is around 32 years, with the oldest parcel dating to 1920.
Producer history
The estate takes its name from Guilhem de Siran, and before the Revolution it belonged to the du Boscq family, passing by marriage into the Toulouse-Lautrec line — Jeanne-Adèle, Countess of Toulouse-Lautrec, was great-grandmother of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The estate reports that the Toulouse-Lautrec family, as legitimists faithful to family tradition, declined inclusion in the 1855 classification. On 14 January 1859 the property was bought by the Bordeaux wine merchant Léo Barbier; his relative Frédéric Miailhe, a wine broker, took over management in 1885 and bought full ownership in 1915. The Miailhe family has run Siran ever since, with Édouard Miailhe, the sixth generation, at the helm since 2007.
Signature pairings
- Duck confit with sautéed potatoes — A Merlot-led Margaux with silky tannins and earthy tobacco notes has enough acidity to cut confit's richness while its rounder texture avoids the tannic clash a firmer Cabernet-dominant wine can create with cured, fatty duck.
- Mushroom and thyme tart — The wine's earthy, savoury register is a direct flavour bridge to mushrooms, and a starter-weight dish suits a medium-bodied claret better than a heavy roast would at the opening of a meal.
- Grilled pork neck with Isaan dipping sauce (คอหมูย่าง) — Charcoal-grilled pork neck brings caramelised, smoky fat that meets the wine's ripe fruit and spice from Petit Verdot; the supple Merlot-led structure tolerates a moderately spicy nam jim better than a high-tannin wine would, though the sauce is best kept on the milder side.
Château Siran has held its ground in Margaux since 1848, and its consistent refusal to chase a classified-growth reclassification has kept focus squarely on vineyard expression rather than prestige politics. The estate sits on the southern edge of the Margaux appellation near Labarde, where deep Günzian gravel beds over clay subsoil deliver exceptional drainage — forcing vine roots deep and concentrating phenolic intensity while preserving the appellation's hallmark aromatic lift. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, typically complemented by Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with aging conducted in French oak barriques, a portion of which are renewed each vintage to layer structure without overwhelming the site's natural finesse. Siran's parcel-by-parcel harvesting and vinification — each plot vinified separately before final assemblage — is a level of granularity unusual for a Cru Bourgeois estate and more commonly associated with classified growths. The result is a Margaux that delivers genuine appellation typicity at a fraction of the appellation's upper-tier pricing. Approachable within 4–6 years of vintage, with the structure to reward a decade of cellaring.
