From our sommelier team
Château Rauzan-Ségla is a Margaux estate on Bordeaux's Left Bank, ranked among the Second Growths in the 1855 classification. The vineyard covers roughly 70 hectares under vine on gravel and clay soils and is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot as the major partner and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; fruit is vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless steel before ageing in French oak barrels, a substantial proportion of them new. The 2017 was reported as roughly 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. In style it leans towards perfume and refinement rather than sheer weight — dark and red fruits, violets, tobacco, cedar and savoury herbs, carried on a medium-bodied palate with fine, silky tannins.
Margaux is the most perfumed of the Médoc communes, and Rauzan-Ségla plays to that rather than fighting it: the 2017 in particular was widely described as medium-bodied, fine-tannined and elegant rather than powerful. That makes it a wine to decant and serve at genuine cellar temperature — around 16-18°C — because over-warm service flattens exactly the floral, cedar and herb aromatics that are the point. Its estate has been under the Wertheimer family of Chanel since 1994, and the whole vineyard has been farmed organically in recent years.
Producer history
The property traces to the vast Rauzan holding of Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan in the mid-17th century, with first vines recorded in 1661; the estate is generally dated to 1763, when it separated from neighbouring Rauzan-Gassies. By 1855 the original Rauzan lands had fragmented into four properties — Rauzan-Gassies, Rauzan-Ségla, Desmirail and Marquis de Terme — and Rauzan-Ségla was classified a Second Growth. In 1994 the estate passed to the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel, who invested heavily in drainage, replanting and cellar equipment, with Nicolas Audebert directing the estate from 2014.
Signature pairings
- Grilled lamb chops with rosemary — A Cabernet-led Margaux with fine tannin and cedar-herb aromatics is the classic Left Bank match for lamb; the herb crust echoes the wine's savoury, leafy side while the protein softens the tannin.
- Roast duck breast with plum sauce — Duck's richness suits a medium-bodied red with crisp acidity, and the dark plum notes in the sauce meet the wine's cassis and damson fruit without overwhelming its perfume.
- Beef massaman curry, mild (แกงมัสมั่นเนื้อ) — Massaman is the gentlest and most aromatic of Thai curries, built on cinnamon, cardamom and bay rather than chilli heat; those warm spices mirror the wine's cinnamon and cedar notes, and the slow-cooked beef flatters its silky tannins. Keep the chilli restrained, as capsaicin heat sharpens tannin.
