Moppa Springs Grenache Shiraz Mataro
฿฿
Rockford's Moppa Springs vineyard sits on the eastern slopes of the Barossa Valley, where red loam over ironstone delivers mineral tension to fruit-forward blends. The Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro (GSM) blend draws from vines planted across multiple decades, capturing the house's commitment to co-fermented, low-intervention winemaking.
Fermentation occurs in open earthen vessels — a signature Rockford technique that amplifies skin contact and tannin integration without aggressive extraction. The wine spends 14 months in French oak (mix of new and seasoned), allowing secondary maturation to soften the Shiraz's peppery spine while Grenache's red-fruit core remains luminous. Mataro (Mourvèdre) anchors the mid-palate with savory, leathery structure.
This is a wine built for food rather than contemplation — the earthiness of fermentation vessel choice shows in the wine's mineral grip and lack of obvious oak vanillin. Drinking window: 2–8 years from release.
