Mouton Cadet Bordeaux Rose
฿
Baron Philippe de Rothschild launched Mouton Cadet in 1930 as a deliberate democratisation of Bordeaux — a négociant blend designed to carry the appellation's identity to a mass audience without the grand cru price barrier. That founding logic still drives every decision: sourcing from across the Bordeaux AOC, selecting for freshness over structure, and releasing early to preserve aromatic lift rather than cellaring potential.
The Bordeaux AOC draws from the broad Gironde basin, where free-draining gravel and sandy soils over clay subsoil moderate vine vigour and encourage early ripening — conditions that favour the pale-extraction, low-tannin profile a rosé demands. The blend is Merlot-dominant, typically complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with each variety vinified separately before assemblage.
Winemaking targets short cold maceration to extract colour without phenolic grip, followed by temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation to lock in primary fruit aromatics. No oak contact is used, preserving the wine's direct, fruit-forward character.
What distinguishes Mouton Cadet Rosé within its tier is the Rothschild quality-control infrastructure applied to a sub-฿800 bottle — rigorous blending trials across dozens of parcels to hit a consistent house style year on year. Drink within 1–2 years of vintage for peak freshness.
