Black Barrel (700 ml)

Mount Gay Black Barrel originates from Barbados's oldest continuously operating distillery, founded 1703 on the island's west coast. The estate sits on coral limestone bedrock with volcanic mineral influence—terroir that shapes the character of cane-derived spirit across generations.

This expression combines pot-still and column-still rums aged in ex-bourbon casks, then finished in heavily charred American oak barrels to deepen color and wood extraction. The charring protocol imparts pronounced caramel and char-oak structure without overwhelming the base spirit's molasses foundation. Bottled at 43% ABV, the spirit carries the weight of extended wood contact while retaining clarity of fermentation character.

The special feature: Mount Gay's finishing strategy—a deliberate secondary maturation in char-heavy wood—distinguishes Black Barrel from the distillery's standard gold expression, creating a bridge between aged rum's vanilla-oak profile and darker, more structured expressions. This is neither a spiced nor heavily manipulated rum, but rather a straightforward exercise in wood influence on Barbadian molasses spirit.
