In 1942, Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada began aging tequila in oak barrels at a time when virtually no other Mexican producer was doing so — a deliberate transgression that effectively created the sipping-tequila category. That founding instinct defines the Reposado today. Distillery La Primavera sits in Atotonilco El Alto, Los Altos (Highlands), Jalisco, at roughly 5,200–6,500 ft elevation on iron-rich volcanic red clay soils. The combination of warm days, cool nights, and mineral-dense earth pushes Blue Weber agave toward a distinctly fruity, floral character that lowland valley tequilas structurally cannot replicate. Agave plants are spaced further apart than industry norm and left to mature 7–15 years before hand-harvest by multi-generational jimador families — yielding denser, sweeter piñas. Piñas are slow-cooked in traditional masonry hornos for 48–72 hours, milled, then fermented with a proprietary yeast strain developed by the founder himself, before double distillation in stainless steel pot stills with copper presence. The Reposado then rests a minimum 8 months in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels — exceeding CRT minimums — long enough to layer vanilla and dried citrus peel over the cooked-agave core without erasing it. What no peer does at this price point: the house philosophy explicitly calibrates barrel influence to complement agave character rather than dominate it, making this one of the few reposados where the highland terroir remains legible through the oak.
