In 1870, Maurice Hennessy created the XO category for family and friends — the same inventive instinct that now drives the house's NBA Limited Edition VSOP, a collector's release built on the same multi-cru architecture that has defined Cognac's most powerful house style since 1765. Eaux-de-vie are drawn from Grande Champagne's shallow clay-limestone chalk, Petite Champagne, the clay-flint soils of Borderies, and Fins Bois — each cru contributing distinct character, from the long-aging potential of Grande Champagne to the rounded, walnut-inflected signature of Borderies. Aged a minimum of four years in Limousin oak barrels — including new oak from Hennessy's own cooperage, which hand-produces 400–500 barrels annually from 80-year-old trees felled from the house's own forests — the spirit rotates between cellars along the humid Charente riverbank (for mellowness) and drier inland chais (for depth and character). What separates Hennessy's distillation from peers: double Charentais pot-still distillation conducted both on and off lees, with heads and tails reintroduced into the brouillis before the second pass, concentrating congeners for a richer, darker profile than Martell or Rémy Martin at the same age tier. The NBA livery is the transgression — a luxury cognac house openly courting streetwear and sports culture — but the liquid inside is the unaltered VSOP blend, assessed by the Fillioux family's eighth consecutive generation of Master Blenders. Bottled at 40% ABV, lightly filtered; non-vintage, assembled for house consistency.
