When Maurice Hennessy created the XO category in 1870 as a private gift for family and friends, he established the logic that still governs this 250th Anniversary Collector Blend: that the Fillioux family — eight unbroken generations of Master Blenders — would decide what exceptional means, not a regulatory minimum. That lineage, 200+ years without interruption, is the technical backbone of this release.
Eaux-de-vie are drawn from Hennessy's four principal crus: the shallow clay-limestone chalk of Grande Champagne (prized for slow oxidation and structural longevity), the clay-flint of Borderies (contributing roundness and violet-inflected depth), and contributions from Petite Champagne and Fins Bois. Spirits aged in humid riverside chais along the Charente yield mellower, rounder character; drier inland cellars add grip and complexity.
Production follows Hennessy's house-defining protocol: double distillation in Charentais alembic copper pot stills, distilling both with and without lees and reintroducing heads and tails into the brouillis on the second pass — a deliberate congener-concentrating decision that separates Hennessy's weight from lighter house styles. Aging proceeds in Limousin oak sourced from Hennessy's own forests, cooperaged on-site at 400–500 barrels per year by hand. The Tasting Committee screens approximately 10,000 eaux-de-vie annually; only a fraction qualify for prestige assemblage.
The special feature: this is a commemorative collector blend anchored by the same eight-generation blending lineage that invented the XO classification itself — no other cognac house can make that claim for a 250th-anniversary release.
