When Maurice Hennessy codified the star-rating system later adopted across the entire cognac industry, he was articulating a philosophy of measurable quality — the same logic that drives the Tasting Committee's annual review of ~10,000 individual eaux-de-vie to assemble this VSOP. That committee answers to the Fillioux family, whose unbroken eight-generation tenure as Hennessy's sole Master Blender lineage spans more than 200 years.

Sourcing draws from Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois — soils shifting from the shallow clay-limestone chalk of Grande Champagne, which drives fine-grained structure and long aging potential, to the clay-flint of Borderies, which contributes rounder, nuttier character. Eaux-de-vie resting in Limousin-oak casks near the humid Charente riverbank mellow faster; those in drier inland chais build more angular depth — both streams feed the final blend.

The technical signature that separates Hennessy from Martell or Rémy Martin: distillation both with and without lees, plus deliberate reintroduction of heads and tails into the brouillis before the second Charentais pot-still pass. This concentrates congeners, pushing the VSOP toward dark fruit, toasted oak, and building spice rather than the lighter floral register of Fine Champagne-focused houses. Bottled at 40% ABV, lightly filtered, non-vintage.

The VSOP's minimum four-year aging floor, drawn from a reserve of 350,000–470,000 casks — the world's largest cognac stockpile — gives the blending team unusual latitude to reach for older, rounder eaux-de-vie within the tier.
