Joseph Drouhin Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
฿17,100
Founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation, Maison Joseph Drouhin completed a full organic and biodynamic conversion across its 100-hectare Burgundy estate — earning ECOCERT certification for the 2009 vintage — a commitment almost without precedent for a négociant-domaine of this scale. Corton-Charlemagne sits on the upper slopes of the Corton hill, where thin, iron-rich limestone and marl soils over hard rock force vine roots deep, concentrating mineral tension and suppressing excessive fruit weight. Vinification follows slow pneumatic pressing, with free-run juice separated from press fractions before alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in French high-forest oak barrels using indigenous yeasts; light bâtonnage during élevage integrates lees texture without obscuring site character. Oak is seasoned approximately three years before coopering, and new-oak exposure is deliberately restrained — Drouhin's house philosophy prioritises terroir transparency over barrel imprint, an unusual discipline at Grand Cru level where many producers lean into new wood. The 2022 growing season was hot and dry, producing phenolically ripe fruit, yet whites held relatively low pH despite the heat — delivering the structural tension that defines Corton-Charlemagne's limestone-driven identity. Drink from 2026 through 2036+.
