Trebbiano DOC
฿
Story: Trebbiano from Abruzzo's eastern slopes has long been Italy's invisible backbone—high-altitude, mineral-driven whites that anchor regional identity without fanfare. Gran Sasso's expression sits in the foothills of the Apennines, where limestone-rich soils and cool nights preserve acidity that defines the DOC.
Terroir: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo occupies calcareous clay and limestone slopes at 300–500m elevation, with Atlantic-moderated temperatures and Adriatic breezes that slow ripening and concentrate mineral character. The subregion's name references the elevation and geological signature, not the Tuscan Vino Nobile.
Technique: Trebbiano grapes harvested at optimal ripeness undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, preserving aromatic volatility and acidity. No oak aging—the wine remains on fine lees briefly post-fermentation, building textural weight without oxidative development. This unoaked approach is standard for DOC Trebbiano, allowing limestone minerality to dominate.
Special Feature: Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is often dismissed as neutral, yet this region's limestone geology and altitude produce wines with genuine salinity and stone-fruit definition—a corrective to the grape's reputation for blandness elsewhere in Italy.
Drinking Window: 2023–2025 optimal; consume young to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity.
