Champagne 'Cuvee Leonie' Brut (750 ml) (With package)
฿฿฿
Canard-Duchêne, established 1868 on the Montagne de Reims, sources fruit from the chalky slopes north of Reims—a terroir defined by Senonian chalk subsoil and cool-climate diurnal swing that locks acidity into the base wines. The house sits at approximately 100–150 meters elevation, where morning fog and afternoon sun create the mineral tension characteristic of the appellation's northern flank.
Cuvée Léonie is built on a multi-vintage blend (the house does not disclose exact proportions, but Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate the Montagne de Reims fruit selection). Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, with extended aging on lees prior to dosage adjustment. The final dosage is restrained—typical of the Brut category—allowing the chalk minerality and acidity to remain the structural spine rather than sweetness.
The special character of Léonie lies in its non-vintage structure: Canard-Duchêne uses reserve wines to maintain a consistent house style across releases, a deliberate choice that prioritizes consistency over vintage declaration. This approach is less common among grower Champagnes but standard practice for established négociant houses.
Expect a wine of medium body with pronounced acidity, driven by chalk minerality and green-apple aromatics. The palate is dry, with fine bubbles and a persistent finish. Drink now through 2028.
