Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Extra Brut 2012
฿18,100
The Clos des Goisses is one of Champagne's most geologically extreme sites — a single walled monopole of 5.5 hectares pitched at a 30–45° south-facing slope directly above the Marne canal in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, where pure chalk and flint subsoils absorb and radiate heat to a degree unmatched in the region. Philipponnat has farmed this parcel since 1935, and it remains the house's singular obsession. The 2012 vintage was harvested from vines averaging over 30 years of age, a year defined by a cool, slow ripening season followed by a September sun window that delivered phenolic maturity without sacrificing the site's structural tension. Vinification proceeds in a combination of oak barrels and stainless steel, with partial malolactic fermentation deliberately arrested to preserve the site's inherent chalk-driven acidity — a deliberate departure from the full-malo approach common across the appellation. The wine aged on lees for a minimum of eight years in Philipponnat's 1.5 km of underground galleries at a constant 12°C, then released at extra brut dosage (under 6 g/L), allowing the terroir rather than sweetness to frame the finish. What no peer replicates: a monopole of this gradient, this chalk purity, unified under a single producer's unbroken stewardship since 1935. The 2012 is now entering its ideal drinking window, with the extended lees contact having resolved any reductive tension into autolytic depth.
