Santa Julia
Santa Julia Cuy Malbec Natural Wine
฿1,000
José Alberto Zuccardi named this brand after his daughter Julia in the 1980s, but the more transgressive act came decades later: launching a Natural line that strips Malbec — Argentina's most commercially packaged grape — of sulfur additions, fining agents, and filtration entirely. Fruit originates from Maipú, Mendoza, on well-drained gravel and sandy soils at approximately 650 m a.s.l., where the arid continental climate delivers high diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatic precision rather than jammy concentration. Fermentation proceeds with indigenous ambient yeasts, incorporating whole-cluster fruit to build structural grip and a tea-like tannic texture distinct from the polished, extracted style that dominates Mendoza at this price point. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero added sulfites — a commitment that extends across the Natural line and is underpinned by Familia Zuccardi's ~400 ha of certified-organic vineyards, the largest such holding in Argentina. What sets this expression apart categorically: it applies natural-wine protocols to a mainstream New World variety at a sub-฿1,000 price, a combination almost without peer in the Southern Hemisphere. Primary plum and blackberry fruit carries a silky, tea-inflected texture; drink through 2030 for peak freshness.
