Morellino di Scansano DOCG
฿฿
Viticcio's Morellino di Scansano originates from the southern Maremma plateau, where volcanic soils and clay-rich terrain define one of Tuscany's most underrated appellations. The estate farms parcels at 200–300 metres elevation on south-facing slopes, where maritime influence from the Tyrrhenian Sea moderates summer heat.
The wine is produced from 100% Sangiovese Grosso (the local Morellino clone), hand-harvested and destemmed into temperature-controlled stainless steel for 12–14 days of maceration. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts. Post-fermentation, the wine ages 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks (no new wood), preserving the mineral spine and tannin structure characteristic of volcanic terroir. Bottling occurs unfiltered.
The special feature here is restraint: Morellino di Scansano permits up to 15% blending with other varieties, yet Viticcio's single-varietal approach emphasizes the Sangiovese Grosso's natural earthiness and structural integrity. The result is a wine that rewards 3–5 years of bottle age, during which the volcanic minerality becomes increasingly pronounced.
