−19%When Rafael Cañizares founded Bodegas Volver in 2004, the deliberate provocation was to take DO La Mancha — Spain's bulk-wine engine room — and prove that its oldest, most neglected dry-farmed Tempranillo could produce single-vineyard wines of genuine site character. The vehicle for that argument is Finca Los Juncares in Cuenca province.
The 29-hectare estate sits at 700 m elevation on poor sandy soils over clay subsoil with limestone patches, receiving a punishing 242 mm of annual rainfall. That chronic water stress, combined with the harsh continental temperature swings, forces the 1957-planted vines to root deep and yield tiny, intensely concentrated clusters — the antithesis of the high-volume irrigation farming that defined the appellation for decades.
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted on a selection table, then fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks at ~28°C with indigenous yeast. What separates the Cuvée from the standard Volver expression is its extended élevage: malolactic fermentation completed in barrel, followed by ~20 months in French oak — the longest aging in the Volver red range — integrating structure without erasing the site's sandy-soil texture.
The 2020 vintage carries no confirmed official notes, but the Cuenca plateau's diurnal amplitude reliably threads ripe fruit against preserved acidity at this altitude. Drink now through 2028.
