Domaine Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Claude Dugat began estate-bottling under his own name in 1991, working from the Cellier des Dîmes — a cellar built in 1219 in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin — and built one of Burgundy's most allocation-scarce cults without a single marketing effort. The Charmes-Chambertin parcel covers just 0.31 hectares of iron-rich reddish limestone over clay, a soil composition that drives pigment depth and structural grip distinct from the paler limestone of neighbouring Grands Crus. Harvest is manual and timed by taste rather than laboratory analysis, deliberately early to lock in natural acidity — a discipline that defines the 2021 vintage's signature precision. In the cellar: 100% destemming, fermentation in concrete vats on indigenous yeasts, cap punched down twice daily with virtually no pump-overs, two-week vatting, then up to 100% new François Frères 228 L barrique for 15–18 months across two cellars. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur — a natural deposit is expected and intentional. What no peer does at this address: Grand Cru concentration achieved at ≤18 hl/ha across every tier, from Bourgogne Rouge upward. The 2021 cool growing season produced wines of uncommon freshness and acidity-driven purity; the Charmes rewards a decade of cellaring but its transparency is already legible. Drink 2027–2040.
