When the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families consolidated ownership in 1938, they inherited an estate already defying Médoc logic: Merlot planted deliberately on the finest Gunzian Garonne alluvial gravel outcrops of the Cantenac-Margaux plateau — the very parcels where Médoc orthodoxy demands Cabernet Sauvignon. That inversion remains Palmer's defining technical signature today.

The 122 plots span 18 distinct soil types across Cantenac, Issan, and Margaux communes. The 30-hectare plateau behind the château delivers gravel-clay that tempers Merlot's exuberance into structure; the higher-gravel Issan sector to the south contributes the Cabernet Sauvignon backbone. The Gironde estuary moderates diurnal swings, extending hang time and phenolic precision. Full biodynamic certification (2017–2018) has sharpened terroir expression across all 122 plots, a commitment almost unmatched among Médoc classified growths.

Vinification proceeds plot-by-plot in 42 temperature-controlled stainless vats, with indigenous yeasts and a three-week fermentation. Élevage runs 20–22 months in two stages: first in 225-litre French oak barriques at under 50% new wood, then transferred to 30-hectolitre oak vats for the second year — a deliberate step that adds patina without layering excess oak over the fruit. The Grand Vin is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The 2018 is widely cited as the finest Palmer of the recent era — sumptuous, silky, and concentrated, described as 'ethereal' by critics, with a 97/100 consensus score. Drinking window: 2028–2060.
