In 2008, Masseto became the first Italian wine distributed through the Place de Bordeaux — a commercial declaration that this single hillside in Bolgheri operated by an entirely different logic than the rest of Tuscany. The 2021 is built on that same radical premise: 100% Merlot from a 6.6–7 hectare parcel of Pliocene blue-grey clay, a former clay quarry on the Masseto hill, approximately 10 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Three sub-plots — Masseto Alto (110 m elevation; blue clay, sand, pebbles), Masseto Centrale (densest Pliocene clay; the structural core), and Masseto Junior (70 m; youngest vines, broadens the mid-palate) — are hand-harvested in 15 kg crates over multiple passes and vinified entirely separately. The clay functions as a natural water reservoir, releasing moisture slowly through dry summers while hardening to restrict root penetration, compressing berry size and intensifying concentration. Marine breezes off the Tyrrhenian preserve acidity that clay-grown Merlot elsewhere rarely achieves.

Fermentation runs 21–28 days in 65 hL tulip-shaped concrete tanks within the gravity-flow underground winery, with small portions fermented directly in barrel. Aging totals 24 months in 100% new French oak barriques — first 12 months for malolactic conversion, then blended and returned for a further 12 — followed by a minimum 12 months in bottle before release. Bottled without chill-filtration.

The 2021 carries a 97-point aggregate score and is projected to drink from 2027 onward — a vintage that rewards patience from a wine that broke Italy's varietal orthodoxy entirely.
