Masseto Toscana IGT 2012

When Marchese Lodovico Antinori planted Merlot on the Masseto hill in 1984, he was defying every orthodoxy of Tuscan viticulture — no Sangiovese, no Cabernet Sauvignon, just a single variety on a former clay quarry that most growers would have dismissed as too heavy. That transgression became Italy's most consequential winemaking decision of the twentieth century.
The 6.6-hectare hillside sits within Bolgheri, roughly 10 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its Pliocene blue-grey clay acts as a natural cistern, releasing stored moisture slowly through dry summers while hardening to limit root penetration — stressing the vine into concentration. Three sub-plots are kept distinct: Masseto Alto (110 m elevation; clay, sand, pebbles) delivers structure and linearity; Masseto Centrale (densest clay) provides the opulent, tannic core; Masseto Junior (70 m; youngest vines) contributes breadth. Marine breezes and amplified late-afternoon Tyrrhenian light moderate ripening, preserving acidity at natural alcohols that can reach 15%+.
Hand-harvested in 15 kg crates over multiple passes, each sub-plot and each harvest pass is fermented separately in temperature-controlled concrete tanks at 25–30°C for 21–28 days, with small portions fermented directly in barrel. The wine then ages 24 months total in 100% new French oak barriques — the first 12 months for malolactic conversion, the second 12 post-assemblage — followed by a minimum 12 months in bottle before release. Bottled without chill-filtration.
The 2012 vintage marks the estate's first year of certified organic farming, adding a layer of historical significance to this already collector-grade expression. No vintage notes or critic scores for 2012 appear in the estate's published record, so the wine should be assessed on its own terms: a Bolgheri growing season shaped by the discipline of the new organic regime and the characteristic coastal moderation of the appellation.
