Nicknamed the 'Baby Grange' not as marketing shorthand but as a technical statement: Bin 389 is matured in the same American oak hogsheads that previously held Grange, inheriting residual tannin structure and aromatic complexity from Australia's most scrutinised red. That deliberate cascade of barrel use — Grange first, Bin 389 second — is a production decision unique to this wine within the Penfolds hierarchy.

The 2020 fruit draws from Barossa Valley, where ancient, deep alluvial and sandy loam soils, free of phylloxera, push Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to produce concentrated, low-acid fruit with naturally plush mid-palate weight. The valley floor's continental heat, moderated by cool overnight drops, builds phenolic ripeness without sacrificing structural grip.

The blend — Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz — is assembled across multiple Barossa sub-sites following Penfolds' multi-vineyard philosophy, prioritising house consistency over single-plot expression. Fermentation employs acclimatised pure yeast cultures in temperature-controlled vessels; the wine then enters those seasoned Grange hogsheads, extracting secondary oak character without the aggression of new wood.

The 1.5L magnum format slows oxygen ingress relative to volume, compressing the aging curve and extending the drinking window — a meaningful advantage for a wine already built for medium-term cellaring. The 2023 Lunar New Year limited-edition release adds collectible provenance to a technically grounded expression.
