Chateau Pontet-Canet AOC Pauillac 2015

When Alfred Tesseron converted all 81 hectares to biodynamic viticulture — earning both Ecocert and Biodyvin/Demeter certification by 2010 — he made Pontet-Canet the first Médoc classified growth to do so, a decision that reshaped how the Left Bank thinks about soil health and fruit expression. The core plateau sits on Günz-era Garonne gravel over limestone bedrock, poor and exceptionally free-draining, forcing Cabernet Sauvignon roots deep and concentrating the mineral salinity that defines the house signature; Merlot parcels on heavier clay-limestone closer to the Gironde add mid-palate density without diluting the tension. Fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts in custom 40 hl conical concrete vats, followed by 16–18 months aging split across approximately 50% new French oak barriques, 35% custom limestone-and-cement dolia (amphorae introduced 2012), and 15% second-fill French oak — the dolia less oxidative than barrel yet not inert, preserving fruit brightness while reinforcing terroir minerality. The amphora proportion at this classification level remains without precedent among Médoc peers. The 2015 vintage delivered a warm, even growing season with well-timed September rains that refreshed acidity, producing a Pauillac of ripe, structured fruit and firm but supple tannins; best drinking from 2025 through 2045.
