From our sommelier team
A Cabernet Sauvignon-led Margaux (about 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot) grown on elevated gravel, sand, clay, and limestone soils in Cantenac. The style is elegant and floral, with red fruit, espresso, mint, and black cherry notes, medium body, and polished tannins, aged 18-20 months in about 40% new French oak.
Kirwan carries one of the higher proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot among Margaux's classified growths, a blend choice that contributes to its floral, spice-forward character. The property is named after Mark Kirwan, an Irish merchant from Galway — one of the Bordeaux 'wine geese' — and the estate's reputation has been steadily rebuilt since Philippe Delfaut (previously technical director at Château Palmer from 1996) became general manager in 2007.
Signature pairings
- Herb-crusted rack of veal — Medium body and floral, spiced red-fruit character suit the delicacy of veal without overpowering it.
- Roasted duck breast with cherry gastrique — Black cherry and mint notes in the wine echo a cherry-based sauce, and polished tannins match duck's richness.
- Mushroom and thyme tart — Earthy mushroom flavors and herbal thyme pair with the wine's espresso and mint undertones and silky tannin.
97 points Wine Enthusiast - "With its new cellars, the estate is performing at top speed and this vintage keeps up the fine track record. Firm tannins and beautifully perfumed fruit are blending together to give a wine that has style as well as structured fruitiness, with all the elegance of great Margaux. Think long-term aging for this wine." Barrel Sample: 95-97
