When Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded Ornellaia in 1981 — in deliberate rivalry with his brother's Solaia and his cousins' Sassicaia — he chose a 99-hectare coastal estate at Castagneto Carducci where Tyrrhenian sea breezes moderate summer heat and surrounding hills block cold winter winds, a microclimate that no inland Tuscan appellation can replicate. The 2015 vintage carries the designation 'Il Carisma', the winemaker's single defining word for that year, interpreted by a commissioned contemporary artist under the Vendemmia d'Artista project running since 2006, with proceeds benefiting the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

The estate's composite soils — marine sediment, alluvial gravel, volcanic material, clay, marl, and calcareous schist across slopes of 5–20° at 50–120 m asl — pull in opposing directions: the denser clay of the original 41 ha block builds structure and depth, while the stonier, better-drained Bellaria property to the north contributes freshness and saline lift. Fermentation proceeds in stainless steel and concrete below 25°C, with 10–15 days maceration (total vat time ~3 weeks), followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques (70% new, 30% once-used). The wine then ages 18 months in those same barriques — 12 months as individual varietal lots, then assembled and returned to barrel for a further 6 months — before a minimum 12 months of bottle age prior to release. What distinguishes Ornellaia within Bolgheri is precisely this dual-block sourcing strategy: no single soil type dominates the blend, and the winemaking deliberately preserves that tension rather than resolving it. The 2015 vintage, now approaching a decade of bottle age, is entering its most expressive window, with the coastal saline thread beginning to surface through the fruit.
