Chateau Clinet
Ronan by Clinet Bordeaux AOC Red
฿900
Ronan Laborde — who took the reins at Château Clinet in 2004 and promptly cut new oak from 100% to 60% to chase delineation over extraction — lends his own name to this Bordeaux AOC cuvée, positioning it as the accessible expression of the same philosophy that drives one of Pomerol's most structurally distinctive estates. The wine draws on the broader Bordeaux appellation rather than the Pomerol plateau's 35-metre peak, yet the house's commitment to precision over plushness carries through. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel preserves primary fruit clarity, while aging in French oak adds spice and frame without overwhelming the mid-weight core. Where the Grand Vin is defined by Günz gravel and crasse de fer iron subsoil driving graphite minerality, Ronan by Clinet trades that site-specific intensity for broader Right Bank accessibility — more Merlot-forward generosity, softer tannin architecture, and an earlier drinking window. The special feature here is provenance transparency: the Laborde name on the label is a deliberate signal that this is a producer-driven, not négociant-anonymous, second label. Drink on release through five to seven years.
