Gerard Bertrand Cote des Roses Rouge
฿1,000
When Gérard Bertrand began converting his Languedoc estates to biodynamics from 2002 onward — ultimately certifying all holdings to Demeter standard — he was making a deliberate argument against the region's bulk-production identity, insisting that the South of France could deliver mineral precision at scale. Côte des Roses Rouge draws on the warm Mediterranean basin of Languedoc-Roussillon, where strong coastal winds reduce disease pressure and allow farming without chemical inputs, and where the core Languedoc blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre ripens fully under intense southern sun. Each parcel is vinified separately in concrete vats or stainless steel before assemblage — a discipline Bertrand applies across all 17 estates — with every winemaking decision timed to the biodynamic lunar calendar. The result is a wine that carries the aromatic lift and garrigue character typical of the appellation, but with a structural clarity that separates it from conventionally farmed peers. What is unusual here is the combination of Demeter certification at genuine commercial scale: no other producer in the world applies this level of biodynamic rigour across a portfolio of this size, meaning even this entry-level rouge is farmed to the same standard as Bertrand's ฿65,000 Clos d'Ora. Drink now through 2–3 years for primary fruit expression.
