Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier

−11%Yalumba planted Viognier in Eden Valley in 1980 — nearly two decades before the variety gained traction elsewhere in Australia — establishing the house as the country's foremost authority on the grape and making this co-fermentation a direct expression of that institutional knowledge. Eden Valley's shallow, rocky, well-drained soils at 400–550 m elevation slow ripening considerably against the Barossa floor, preserving the aromatic lift and natural acidity that define the region's Shiraz. The Viognier component is co-fermented with the Shiraz rather than blended post-vinification — a technique that bonds the aromatic compounds of the white grape irreversibly into the red's colour and structure, producing a violet-tinged hue and a floral-savoury tension no post-blend can replicate. Fermentation follows Yalumba's minimal-intervention philosophy, with oak treatment calibrated to preserve fruit transparency rather than impose wood character. All Yalumba wines have been 100% vegan since the 2012 vintage, with no animal-derived fining agents — an unusual commitment at this production scale. The Y Series sits at the entry point of a house whose Viognier expertise runs from this wine up to the benchmark single-vineyard Virgilius, meaning the technical DNA here is genuinely pedigreed. Drink now through 3–4 years for peak aromatic expression.
