Domaine Philippe Colin Santenay Clos Saint Jean
฿3,700
When Philippe Colin split from Domaine Michel Colin-Déléger in 2004 — ending a family winemaking lineage traceable to the 1850s — he made a deliberate stylistic declaration: Pinot Noir built on tension, not timber. The Santenay Clos Saint Jean sits at the southern reach of the Côte de Beaune, where soils shift toward heavier limestone-laced clay, lending the wine a slightly firmer structural backbone than the silkier Chassagne parcels to the north, while the appellation's cooler microclimate preserves the aromatic lift that defines Colin's red wine philosophy.
Full destemming is non-negotiable here, followed by cold pre-fermentation maceration and moderate extraction — a deliberate counter to the extracted, oak-forward Santenay style some négociants favour. Aging proceeds exclusively in 500 L barrels (larger format than the standard 228 L Burgundy barrique) for 10–12 months, then a further 3–6 months in stainless steel vat before light filtration — the larger wood volume reducing oak imprint while maintaining textural development. The 500 L barrel is the technical signature across all Colin reds, a format choice that keeps the fruit primary and the tannin grain fine.
In 2022, village-level reds from the domaine averaged 89/100 across aggregated critics — a warm year that amplifies the red-fruit register without sacrificing the site's characteristic mineral edge.
