Chateau Ferrande Graves Rouge AOC
฿฿
SaleMaison Castel, one of Bordeaux's largest négociant houses, sources fruit for Château Ferrande from the Graves appellation south of the city — a zone where the defining feature is a deep mantle of Günzian gravel deposited over clay subsoil. That gravel drains aggressively, stressing vines into low yields and concentrating phenolics, while the clay beneath retains just enough moisture to prevent shut-down during dry summers. The result is a structured red with firm backbone and earthy mineral character typical of the left-bank Graves style. The blend is anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot softening the mid-palate, and the wine undergoes aging in French oak barriques, integrating tannin without overwhelming the fruit. What separates Ferrande from generic Bordeaux AOC is its Graves appellation specificity — the gravel-dominant soils impart a gravelly, almost smoky mineral note that flat, clay-heavy Bordeaux generics rarely achieve. Drink now through 3–5 years from vintage for primary fruit alongside developing earthy complexity.
