Dominus Estate Napanook 2018
฿8,250
When Christian Moueix — steward of Château Pétrus — transplanted his Libourne château philosophy to Napa in 1983, he did so at the precise moment the valley was racing toward extraction and heavy new oak. His deliberate counter-move: no irrigation, no fining agents, single-vineyard estate bottling. Napanook Vineyard sits on a 124-acre alluvial fan spreading from the Mayacamas foothills in Yountville AVA, where volcanic, gravelly clay-loam soils over natural drainage force root systems deep into the earth. Dry-farming — virtually unheard of across Napa Valley — produces smaller berries with dense phenolic concentration, while afternoon breezes off San Pablo Bay preserve acidity and structural tension. The 2018 blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot was fermented block by block, with hand-sorting reinforced by optical berry selection, gentle pump-overs, and low-pressure vertical pressing. Aging ran in 100% French oak barrique for approximately 15–18 months, with barrel-to-barrel racking substituting for fining. What distinguishes 2018 within the Dominus canon is its uncharacteristic generosity: a warm growing season coaxed lush blackberry, plum, and licorice from soils that typically deliver graphite and iron, producing the most immediately accessible expression of Napanook in recent memory — yet the volcanic alluvial structure guarantees a long arc. Drink now through 2038+.
