Miljenko Grgich arrived in Napa Valley in 1958 and built his reputation on precision winemaking—a philosophy that crystallized when his 1973 Chardonnay defeated French competition at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. His Merlot program, launched in the 1980s, applies that same uncompromising standard to Rutherford's gravelly benchland, where volcanic soils and morning fog create the slow ripening window Merlot demands.
The vineyard sits at 200–250 feet elevation on Rutherford's east-facing slope, where well-drained, iron-rich volcanic loam encourages deep root penetration and phenolic ripeness without excess alcohol. Fruit is destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged 18–24 months in French oak (typically 30–40% new), allowing the wine to develop structure without oak dominance. Grgich Hills' house style favors restraint: malolactic fermentation is managed to preserve acidity, and bottling occurs without fining or filtration in many vintages.
This Merlot carries the estate's signature tension between ripe Rutherford fruit and Napa Valley's cool-climate precision—a rare balance in a region often seduced by extraction. The wine drinks well on release but rewards 5–8 years of bottle age, when secondary flavors emerge and tannins integrate fully.
