La Croix de Beaucaillou St Julien

When Bruno Borie slashed Grand Vin production from over 20,000 to just 6,000–8,000 cases annually — selecting only 27% of vineyard output — the displaced fruit had to go somewhere. La Croix de Beaucaillou is that decision made tangible: the same 75-hectare parcel of 6–8 metre deep Günz gravel (quartz pebbles, lydian jasper, flint, and agatoids deposited by the ancient Garonne two million years ago over Oligocene mud and Eocene limestone), the same parcel-by-parcel vinification in stainless steel tanks with a minimum seven-day maceration, but aged for 12 months in 60–70% new French oak barriques rather than the Grand Vin's 100% new oak regime. The Gironde estuary's four daily tidal movements moderate the microclimate, tempering the 2012 vintage's irregular growing season and preserving the appellation's characteristic graphite-edged freshness. What sets this expression apart is structural: it carries the architectural DNA of a Deuxième Cru Classé terroir — fine-grained tannins, pencil-lead minerality, cassis-driven fruit — at a fraction of the oak saturation, making it the more transparent lens onto the gravel plateau itself. The 2012, a cool, late-ripening year in Saint-Julien, delivers a linear, medium-bodied profile now entering its drinking window with a decade of further development ahead.
