Alter Ego de Palmer, Margaux 2019

−16%Alter Ego was conceived not as a declassified surplus but as a deliberate parallel expression — the lots from younger vines and lighter gravel-sand sectors of Palmer's 122-plot mosaic that the team chose to vinify separately rather than dilute the Grand Vin's identity. That editorial discipline is the key to understanding why this second wine punches so far above its category.
The fruit draws from the same Gunzian Garonne alluvial gravel-over-gravel-clay plateau in the communes of Cantenac and Margaux, where the Gironde estuary moderates diurnal swings and extends the growing season. Lighter gravel fractions here accelerate drainage and heat retention, producing earlier phenolic ripeness and a more immediately expressive aromatic register than the deeper croupes reserved for the Grand Vin.
Vinified plot-by-plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel, fermented on indigenous yeasts with minimal SO₂ from harvest, then aged 16–18 months in 25–40% new French oak barriques — a meaningfully lower new-wood ratio than the Grand Vin's 40–50%, preserving fruit transparency. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, consistent with Palmer's house philosophy.
The 2019 vintage delivered what critics describe as a rare convergence of powerful Merlot ripeness and cool, reserved Cabernet structure — a combination that earned 97/100 consensus for the Grand Vin and lifts Alter Ego well above its second-wine peers. Drink 2025–2038.
