Antinori Villa Antinori Toscana Rosso IGT
฿฿
The Antinori family has produced wine continuously since 1385, and Villa Antinori Rosso — first released in 1928 — was conceived as a declassified, earlier-drinking counterpart to the estate's more serious Chiantis, a deliberate commercial and stylistic choice that predates the modern IGT category by decades.
Fruit is sourced from Antinori's Tuscan estate vineyards, where the predominant soils are galestro (friable schist-limestone) and alberese (compact clay-limestone), the twin geological signatures of inland Tuscany that restrict vine vigour and concentrate berry character while preserving natural acidity.
The blend centres on Sangiovese (approximately 60%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. After fermentation, the wine undergoes aging in a combination of French oak barriques and larger Slavonian oak casks, a regime that softens Sangiovese's angular tannins without overwhelming its fruit.
What sets this expression apart is its IGT status — chosen deliberately to allow the non-traditional varieties to enter the blend freely, bypassing Chianti DOCG rules.
Approachable on release, the wine rewards drinking within 4–6 years of vintage, when its red-fruit core and savoury, earthy undertones are at their most expressive.
