The Bonnie Pinot Noir Rose
฿
SaleMount Riley has farmed in Marlborough since 1996, and The Bonnie is built around the estate's Pinot Noir blocks in the Wairau Valley — the broad, sun-drenched floor where free-draining alluvial gravels over clay subsoil push vines to produce fruit with bright natural acidity and clean varietal definition. The valley's reliable sunshine and cool southerly winds extend the ripening window, preserving aromatic lift while building phenolic structure uncommon in rosé at this price point.
The wine is made in a direct-press style, with minimal skin contact to achieve its pale salmon hue, then fermented cool in stainless steel to lock in primary fruit character. No oak contact and early bottling preserve the Wairau's signature freshness. The result is a dry rosé with a taut, saline finish driven by the valley's high diurnal temperature range.
What separates The Bonnie from most entry-level New Zealand rosé is its deliberate use of Pinot Noir as the sole variety — not a blending afterthought — giving it genuine red-fruit depth and a faint tannic grip that most Marlborough rosés, built on Merlot or Syrah, cannot replicate. Drink young, within 1–2 years of vintage, to capture the tension between fruit and acidity at its sharpest.
