Gérard Bertrand formally founded his wine company in 1992, but the family's roots in Languedoc stretch back to his grandmother Paule Bertrand in the 1920s — a lineage that now underpins the world's largest Demeter-certified biodynamic wine operation, spanning over 900 hectares across 17 estates. Gris Blanc draws on the warm Mediterranean terroir of Languedoc-Roussillon, where strong coastal winds reduce disease pressure and allow farming without chemical inputs, and limestone and clay soils lend the wine its pale, mineral-driven character. The rosé is produced by the saignée method, with fermentation in stainless steel and no malolactic fermentation — a deliberate choice to lock in the region's natural acidity and keep the palate taut rather than creamy. Every stage, from harvest timing to bottling, is governed by the biodynamic lunar calendar, a discipline Bertrand applies uniformly across all estates. The blend centres on Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah — the classic Languedoc rosé trio — producing a pale copper-pink wine with dried garrigue herbs, white peach, and a saline coastal lift that distinguishes it from the rounder, fruit-forward Provence style. At this price point, the Demeter certification and estate-grown sourcing across biodynamically farmed parcels is genuinely unusual. Drink young to capture the freshness the no-malolactic regime preserves.
