Duncan Thomas built Loch Lomond's distillery in 1964 on the site of the Alexandria Works, a Victorian iron foundry that once supplied components for Clyde shipbuilding — the same brick warehouse bones now create varied maturation microclimates across the campus. The distillery sits precisely on the Highland Boundary Fault in Dunbartonshire, a geological seam that places it within the Highland classification while drawing water from Loch Lomond itself, a cold, soft-water source that keeps fermentation clean and ester-driven. Fermentation runs a minimum of 92 hours and extends to 160 hours — roughly double the Speyside industry norm — deliberately building long-chain esters and fruit complexity before the wash ever reaches a still. The 14 Year Old matures in ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads and barrels, the house's primary cask choice, which the distillery credits for its honey and vanilla character; the on-site cooperage, operational since 1994, re-chars up to 20,000 casks annually, maintaining tight control over wood contribution. What separates this expression from any peer is the still architecture behind it: Loch Lomond operates straight-neck pot stills fitted with 17 fixed copper rectification plates — a design developed by Thomas at Littlemill in the 1950s and used nowhere else on earth — capable of producing spirit at ~90% ABV versus the ~68–70% of conventional swan-neck stills, yielding a lighter, more floral malt character at the same Highland address. At 14 years, the extended ex-bourbon maturation has fully integrated that high-rectification distillate into a fruit-forward, honey-sweet profile with soft approachability.
