17 Years Old PX Sherry Quarter Cask Finish

Glencadam spent most of its modern existence as an invisible blending workhorse — a key malt in Ballantine's — before Angus Dundee Distillers acquired the Brechin site in 2003 and launched official single malt bottlings in 2005. That blending-era anonymity belies a technically distinctive distillery: both pot stills carry lyne arms angled upward at 15° above horizontal, combined with an external heater-diffuser on the wash still, generating exceptional copper reflux and an unusually light, estery new make for the Eastern Highlands.

Production water travels 8.7 miles from springs at The Moorans near Loch Lee, piped through the Unthank Hills — reportedly the longest water pipeline of any Scottish malt distillery — before the spirit matures across eleven on-site dunnage warehouses in Angus. The 17 Year Old begins in ex-bourbon American oak, building the distillery's signature vanilla-custard and orchard-fruit register, before a secondary finish in Pedro Ximénez sherry quarter casks — the smaller vessel accelerating wood-to-spirit contact and layering dried fig, dark raisin, and baking spice over that creamy base.

The special feature here is the tension between Glencadam's constitutionally light, high-reflux spirit and the intensity of PX sherry in a quarter cask format: the finish amplifies without overwhelming, because the underlying distillate is structured to resist domination. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, natural colour — no caramel addition, full mouthfeel intact.
