When Aurora Brewing Ltd. revived Wolfburn in 2013 — siting the new distillery 350 metres from the ruins of William Smith's 1821 original at Henderson Park, Thurso — the deliberate choice was to build with zero automation, a commitment that holds through every Small Batch release today. Process water is drawn from the Wolf Burn itself, a spring-fed stream filtered through Caithness flagstone, arriving crystal-clear and cold, contributing to the clean, precise spirit character that defines the house style.

The extreme northerly coastal position of Caithness — the Scottish mainland's northernmost distillery — subjects dunnage-warehoused casks to a mild maritime climate year-round, threading a subtle saline edge through the fruit-forward spirit. Casks rest on clay floors, stacked no higher than three, in conditions that slow extraction and preserve delicacy.

The spirit still's reflux bowl delivers extended copper contact, producing a lighter, fruitier new-make than most Highland peers. Long fermentation in stainless steel washbacks — sourced from the closed Caperdonich distillery — builds the biscuity, orchard-fruit backbone. Small Batch No.204 is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, bottled on-site at Wolfburn's own purpose-built facility, one of very few Scottish distilleries to distil, mature, and bottle entirely under one roof.

What sets No.204 apart within the Small Batch series is the specific cask selection driving this batch's profile — a direct expression of Wolfburn's cask-diversity philosophy rather than any single wood type dominating. The 2013 revival stock is now entering genuine maturity, and the complexity gap between early NAS releases and current batches is measurable.
