Shinjirō Torii founded Suntory's whisky enterprise in 1923 at Yamazaki — at the misty confluence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers southwest of Kyoto — with a conviction that Japan's uniquely humid, seasonally extreme climate could produce whisky unlike anything Scotland offered. The Royal Whisky Year of the Dragon 2024 is a limited-edition release within that century-old lineage, issued to mark the Lunar New Year and produced under Suntory's Tsukuriwake philosophy: the deliberate in-house cultivation of 100+ distinct malt styles across Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita, enabling master blenders to construct the final blend without trading a single cask externally. Malt components draw from pot-distilled Yamazaki and Hakushu spirit — the former matured in warm, low-elevation river-valley warehouses, the latter aged slowly at ~708 m in the granite-filtered air of the Southern Japanese Alps — blended with Chita grain whisky produced via continuous column distillation at ~94% ABV from a corn-dominant grain bill. Suntory's signature Japanese Mizunara oak (Quercus mongolica) — so porous it is cooperated almost nowhere else in world whisky — contributes its irreplaceable sandalwood and kyara incense character to the cask regime. What distinguishes this expression is its collectible cultural positioning: a numbered limited edition tied to the Dragon zodiac cycle, packaged as a deliberate objet, making it one of the few Suntory releases where the release calendar itself is the production constraint rather than aged-stock availability.
