A Tale of Winter (700 ml) (Limited Edition)

When William Matheson converted the Morangie Farm brewery in 1843, he acquired second-hand London gin stills — the tallest in Scotland at 5.14 metres — and inadvertently engineered a house style built on extreme copper reflux and feather-light new-make spirit. A Tale of Winter is a limited seasonal release that channels that structural delicacy through a deliberate cold-season lens.

The distillery sits on the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth in Tain, Ross-shire, drawing water from Tarlogie Springs — rainwater filtered for up to 100 years through limestone and sandstone in the Tarlogie Hills, producing unusually hard, mineral-rich water that sets Glenmorangie apart from the soft-water Speyside norm. The coastal microclimate adds a faint saline edge to maturation.

Spirit is distilled from very lightly peated malt through a tight heart cut (74% down to 60% ABV), then matured in Glenmorangie's proprietary ex-bourbon American white oak casks — Ozark Mountain timber air-dried two years and bourbon-seasoned before a single drop of spirit enters. The finishing regime for this limited edition introduces additional cask influence designed to evoke winter spice and dried fruit without overwhelming the distillery's inherently floral base.

What distinguishes this expression within the range is its status as a limited seasonal release — a deliberate narrative departure from the core Extra Maturation lineup, using the same proprietary cask infrastructure but applied to a winter-specific flavour brief. Drink now through the near term; the light-bodied structure does not demand extended cellaring.
