Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky (700 ml)
฿3,489
On Burns Night 2010, a Kavalan expression defeated three Scotch whiskies in a blind tasting held in Leith — the moment that forced the whisky world to reckon with what subtropical heat can do to oak. The Concertmaster Port Cask Finish is the core-range expression built around that tropical-meets-Iberian proposition. Yuan Shan Distillery sits in Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, where cold air descending from the Xueshan (Snow Mountain) Range collides with humid Pacific Ocean breezes; warehouse upper floors reach 42°C in summer, driving wood extraction at a rate that renders four Taiwanese years broadly equivalent to 10–15 Scottish ones. The new-make spirit — double-distilled in Forsyths copper pot stills (12,000-litre wash, 7,000-litre spirit) from unpeated Scottish and Finnish malted barley, with a spirit cut narrowed to 65–55% ABV for added complexity — is first matured in ex-bourbon American oak before a Portuguese port barrique finish layers dried fig, dark plum, and cocoa over the house's signature mango-and-cream tropical base. What no peer in Scotland replicates: the same subtropical microclimate that accelerates maturation also preserves vivid fruit intensity, so the port influence reads as amplification rather than correction. Bottled at 40% ABV, chill-filtered, and drawn from blended casks rather than a single barrel — the accessible entry point into Kavalan's port-cask architecture.
