When Harold Currie, former Managing Director of Chivas Brothers, revived legal distillation on Arran in 1995 after a 160-year island silence, he made a deliberate break from island convention: no peat, no maritime smoke — instead, a clean, fruit-forward spirit that would let cask work speak clearly. The Sherry Cask Finish is where that philosophy lands most expressively. Water drawn from Loch na Davie cascades through six waterfalls over granite bedrock above Lochranza's Glen Eason Biorach, arriving at the mash tun soft and mineral-clean — a foundation that preserves the distillery's signature citrus brightness through maturation. In the stillhouse, 60–75-hour fermentations in Oregon pine washbacks build fruity congeners before double distillation through tall-necked, long-lyne-arm copper pot stills; the broad wash stills and bulb-shaped spirit stills together produce a new make collected at ~68% ABV with exceptional delicacy. The spirit matures in primarily refill casks before a dedicated ex-sherry European oak finish layers dried fruit, cocoa, and warm spice over the house's characteristic apple-and-citrus core. Crucially, the whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, with zero caramel colouring — a standard Arran holds across virtually its entire range, rare discipline for a producer at this price point. What sets this expression apart within the Arran portfolio is the sherry finish's ability to amplify body without suppressing the granite-water minerality that defines Lochranza's terroir.
