Monkey Shoulder was created by William Grant & Sons specifically to challenge the perception that blended malt Scotch was a lesser category — the name itself references the repetitive-strain injury maltmen suffered from hand-turning barley on the malting floor, a nod to the labour behind traditional floor malting. The liquid draws exclusively from three Speyside distilleries within the Grant family: Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie, all operating in the Dufftown valley where the River Fiddich cuts through soft, porous sandstone and limestone geology, producing a characteristically gentle, cereal-forward spirit profile. Maturation is carried out in a combination of first-fill and refill American oak ex-bourbon casks, which drive the whisky's pronounced vanilla and toasted grain character without heavy wood tannin. The blend is bottled at 40% ABV and is not chill-filtered at standard commercial temperatures, preserving natural oils. What sets this expression apart within the blended malt category is its single-ownership sourcing — every drop originates from one company's distilleries, giving the blender unusually precise control over house style across all three contributing spirits.
