When William Matheson converted Morangie Farm's brewery into a distillery in 1843, he acquired second-hand London gin stills — and their extraordinary height became Glenmorangie's defining structural signature. At 5.14 m, the spirit stills remain Scotland's tallest, enforcing such intense copper reflux that heavy congeners never reach the condenser, producing one of the lightest new-make spirits in the Highlands.

The distillery sits on the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth in Tain, Ross-shire, drawing water from Tarlogie Springs — rainwater filtered through limestone and sandstone for up to 100 years, yielding hard, mineral-rich water that stands in sharp contrast to the soft water of most Speyside peers. Glenmorangie owns ~650 acres of the Tarlogie catchment specifically to protect this source.

The 18 Year Old matures in ex-bourbon American white oak casks sourced from Glenmorangie's proprietary Ozark Mountain forests in Missouri: staves air-dried two years, then bourbon-seasoned for four years before a single drop of spirit enters. The heart cut runs from 74% ABV down to 60% ABV — a tight window that excludes feinty notes entirely. Bottled at 43% ABV.

What no peer replicates: Glenmorangie controls wood grain density, air-drying, and bourbon seasoning from forest to cask — a supply-chain depth virtually unmatched in Scotch production, and the reason 18 years in these barrels reads as precision rather than weight.

Extended maturation amplifies the distillery's citrus and stone-fruit character while Ozark oak contributes deepening vanilla and dried-orchard layers; drink now through the next decade.
