Founded in 1790 by John Ross on the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth — with unofficial distilling records tracing to 1749 — Balblair relocated in 1872 to sit beside the Inverness–Ardgay railway, a site designed by distillery architect Charles C. Doig and still operating from its original 1894 dunnage warehouses with beaten-earth floors. Those warehouses are not incidental: slow, low-evaporation maturation in traditional dunnage is a structural commitment, not a heritage flourish.

Water is drawn from the Allt Dearg burn, piped five miles from the Edderton Hills — the same source retained when the distillery physically moved. Unpeated malted barley from Glen Ord Maltings is mashed for clear wort, fermented approximately 62 hours in Oregon pine washbacks, then distilled through squat, onion-shaped copper pot stills with wide necks and no reflux bowls. New make is filled to cask at ~68.5% ABV — notably above the Scottish industry norm of ~63.5% — meaning the spirit matures more slowly and retains more of its original fruity, ester-forward character over time.

The 170 Commemorative expression is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered and at natural colour, consistent with the entire core range. What sets this apart: Balblair was one of Scotland's few distilleries to release whisky by distillation vintage rather than age statement from 2007 to 2019, and the house philosophy of bottling only casks judged at 'optimum maturation' — each hand-stencilled by the men who filled them — underpins every commemorative selection. Citrus peel, orchard fruit, honey, and sweet toffee define the mid-palate, with spice building on the finish.
