Compass Box (Signature range) The Spice Tree (700 ml)
฿8,499
In 2005, the Scotch Whisky Association forced Compass Box to withdraw the original Spice Tree after ruling that its custom French oak inner staves — inserted to amplify spice extraction — violated Scotch Whisky Regulations. John Glaser's response was to engineer a compliant workaround: casks fitted with heavily toasted French oak heads rather than staves, preserving the same flavour ambition within the letter of the law. The Spice Tree is a blended malt assembled from Highland malt parcels sourced from distilleries including Clynelish and Benrinnes, selected for their waxy, meaty character, then finished in these bespoke French oak head casks commissioned and held in Compass Box's own bonded warehouse stocks in Scotland. The French oak delivers elevated levels of vanillin, eugenol, and wood spice compounds — cinnamon bark, clove, toasted coconut — that American ex-bourbon oak structurally cannot. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, and with no added colouring, the whisky retains the natural texture and fatty mouthfeel that chill filtration would strip. What makes this expression categorically unusual: it is the only Scotch whisky whose entire commercial identity was forged by a regulatory ban — the recipe exists precisely because a version of it was prohibited. As a non-vintage blend, character is recipe-consistent across batches rather than year-dependent.
